GeoAI at the inaugural meeting of EuroSDR SIG GeoAI

Under the auspices of the European association EuroSDR (European Spatial Data Research), an interest group called the GeoAI Special Interest Group (SIG) was established, whose inaugural meeting took place from 26 to 28 November 2025 in Rotterdam.

For decades, EuroSDR (European Spatial Data Research) has connected national mapping and cadastral agencies with academic institutions across Europe; by establishing an interest group for geospatial artificial intelligence, it aims to contribute to the development of innovative solutions and their transfer into practice. Slovenia was represented by Prof. Dr. Anka Lisec from UL FGG, who also chairs the EuroSDR Commission for Knowledge Transfer, and representatives of the Surveying and Mapping Authority of the Republic of Slovenia, Melita Ulbl, MSc, and Primož Melanšek, MSc.

A key objective of the meeting was to co-create the strategy and action plan for the SIG GeoAI interest group. The event included intensive interactive workshops aimed at reviewing the current state, best practices, and challenges in the field of geospatial artificial intelligence, with a particular focus on national needs within the public spatial data infrastructure. Participants were also introduced to the GeoAI project in Slovenia. We believe that through active participation in the interest group, we can together shape the intelligent and user-friendly geoinformation services of the future.
